The National Association of State Boards of Education has named Brenda Lilienthal Welburn as its executive director.
Before being approved by the NASBE board of directors late last month, Ms. Welburn served for five years as the group's deputy executive director, and for four years as its director of governmental affairs. She also acted as interim executive director when the position was vacated in August by Gene Wilhoit, who became the state education chief in Arkansas.
Ms. Welburn, who began her career in social work in Philadelphia, also was a legislative assistant on child welfare and education issues for former U.S. Sen. Paul Tsongas of Massachusetts.
