Legislative Action

Crime Bills, Safe Schools
HR 3351, HR 3353, S 1607, S 1125

The House last week approved HR 3353, which would authorize $100 million for gang-prevention efforts, but failed to suspend the rules to pass HR 3351, which would authorize $200 million to develop alternative punishments for young offenders; debate will be scheduled. The Senate began debate on S 1607, an omnibus crime bill. The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee passed S 1125, the "safe schools act.''

Higher Education Act
HR 3376

The House last week passed technical amendments to the Higher Education Act, which would require the Education Department to choose a cross-section of schools if enough do not volunteer for the new direct-loan program.
