The Philadelphia school board last week saluted Superintendent Constance E. Clayton, who on Oct. 4 marks her 10th anniversary as the leader of the school district.
Ms. Clayton is now one of the longest-tenured urban superintendents in the nation.
Board members were joined by students, representatives of parents’ groups, the city’s mayor, and members of the city council at a special ceremony during which they presented the superintendent with a formal commendation.
Under Ms. Clayton’s leadership, the proclamation said, the district has achieved “fiscal stability; labor peace; an overdue plan for capital improvements; steady incremental academic achievement; an enhanced commitment to science and mathematics instruction; a core curriculum ensuring educational equity; innovative instructional-support programs; a vibrant, strong, varied, and growing partnership network with businesses, communities, and institutions of higher learning; unprecedented foundation support; major system goals and a strategic plan for their achievement; and a governance model for shared decisionmaking/school-based management.’'
