Legislative Action

FY 1993 Education Budget
The House Appropriations subcommittee on labor, health and human services, and education last week held its first hearings on 1993 education funding. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander testified.

Family Issues
The House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families held a hearing last week on the condition of the American family.

Higher Education Act
S 1150
The Senate on Feb. 20 began consideration of legislation to reauthorize the Higher Education Act and was expected to approve the bill late last week after debating several amendments.

Impact Aid
S 2066
The Senate Armed Services subcommittee on readiness, sustainability, and support held a heating last week on a proposal to shift responsibility under the impact-aid program for schools serving military dependents to the Defense Department.

National Testing
The House Education and Labor subcommittee on elementary, secondary, and vocational education last week held the second of three scheduled hearings on a proposal for national education standards and a national system of assessments. The Congressional Office of Technology Assessment released the summary of a study urging caution in the development of new assessments.
