The American Association for Counseling and Development has entered the magazine-publishing arena for the first time in its 40-year history, launching a broadly focused journal to address the professional needs of its 60,000 members and other counselors working in education, health care, human-development agencies, industry, and other areas.
The cover story of the inaugural issue of American Counselor, a quarterly, is on multiculturalism, offering strategies counselors can use to meet the needs of an ethnically diverse clientele. Other stories profile a highly successful high-school counselor, examine whether career counseling includes therapy, and weigh the pros and cons of counselor accreditation. Regular features will include a legal-advice column and an opinion forum.

"Politicians and reformers are notoriously unschooled about the history of reform," according to the editors of the International Journal of Education Reform, who hope to correct that deficiency in a quarterly billed as a "roundtable for reform worldwide."
Edited by scholars, with a board that encompasses differing perspectives within the field, the journal will be published by Technomic Publishing Company Inc.
The premiere issue features articles on increasing educational productivity, the restructuring of the Kentucky Department of Education, national standards for school administrators, and diversity-based staffing and recruitment policies at colleges.
Regular features will include views on legal and instructional matters, research news, and book reviews.

One of the most popular book series in the young-adult market hits a milestone this month and is branching out commercially to licensed-product lines that may aid some educational programs.
"The Baby-Sitters Club," created in 1986 as a literary miniseries and published by Scholastic Inc., will offer its 50th title--and 50 millionth book--in February. Several toy lines, including trading cards, dolls, and electronics, will also hit the stores this year.
Ann Martin, the series author, donates a portion of book and merchandise proceeds to the Ann M. Martin Foundation, targeted at children, education and literacy programs, and the homeless.
