The St. Louis, Mo., school beard last week named David J. Mahan, who had been serving as interim superintendent since July 1990, as the distrlct’s new superintendent.

Mr. Mahan, 57, a graduate of the St. Louis public schools, succeeds Jerome B. Jones, who resigned his position in June 1990. Mr. Mahan had been the district’s assistant superintendent for middle schools before being named interim superintendent.

After conducting two national searches, the St. Louis board voted 7 to 5 to offer a four-year contract to Mr. Mahan, according to a district spokesman. He will be paid approximately $125,000 annually.

The Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education and Gov. Bruce G. Sundlun last week selected Peter McWalters, the superintendent of the Rochester, N.Y., school system, to be the state’s new commissioner of education.

Mr. McWalters will succeed J. Troy Earhart, who retired on Sept. 1. He is expected to begin the job around Jan. 1. The board did not announce his salary.
