One-half of the nation’s colleges and universities say they received more applications from prospective freshmen this year than they did the year before, according to the National Association of College Admission Counselors.

Of 725 colleges and universities surveyed by the association, 50 percent reported an increase in applications for the 1991-92 academic year. Another 39 percent reported a decrease, while 11 percent said the number of applications they received remained about the same.

That contrasts with 41 percent reporting an increase in applications during the 1990-91 academic year, and 47 percent reporting a decrease, according to a previous NACAC survey.

The 1991-92 survey also noted that 54 percent of public schools and 48 percent of private schools reported that they had received more applications. Fifty-two percent of the institutions over all reported receiving more applications from minorities than the previous year; 15 percent reported a decrease.

More information on the survey is available from NACAC, 1800 Diagonal Drive, Suite 430, Alexandria, Va. 22314; telephone: (703) 836-2222.

Meanwhile, tuition and fees at public schools increased at a much higher rate than at private schools for the 1991-92 academic year, according to a new Peterson’s survey.

Four-year public schools registered an overall increase of 13.2 percent, according to the survey, while the tuition increase at four-year private schools came to 9.4 percent.

At two-year colleges, the results were similar, according to the survey: a 9.5 percent tuition increase among public institutions and a 5.1 percent tuition increase at private institutions.

“Peterson’s Annual Survey of Undergraduate Institutions” is available from Peterson’s, 202 Carnegie Center, P.O. Box 2123, Princeton, N.J. 08543-2123; telephone: (800) 338-3238.

Students with learning disabilities have a new resource for information on colleges and universities.

The K&W Guide: Colleges and the Learning Disabled Student contains such standard information as general admissions and graduation requirements for more than 350 colleges. In addition, however, it contains information on programs, services, and admissions for learning-disabled students.

The guide also includes contact persons for the admissions of such students.

The guide is available for $28.45, including postage and handling, from Kravets, Wax & Associates, P.O. Box 187, Deerfield, Ill. 60015-0187. Illinois residents should include an additional 6.5 percent for sales tax.--M.P.
