Legislative Action

Lead Testing HR 2840 The House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment held a hearing on July 26 on proposed legislation that would require schools to test their drinking water for the presence of lead.

Radon Testing

S 792 The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Aug. 1 approved legislation that would require schools in areas with high concentrations of radon to test their air for the gas.

Vocational Education

HR 2313 The Congress has amended the 1990 Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act to allow more community colleges to participate in tech-prep programs. Participation was extended to include colleges with student-loan default rates of up to 35 percent; participation previously was limited to colleges with rates no greater than 20 percent.

Indian Vocational Education

S 1530 The Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs approved a bill to allow Indian tribes to merge job-training and vocational-education programs.

Base Closings

The House voted in late July to approve the closing of 36 military installations by 1997 and consolidate 43 others, ensuring that the closures will move forward.
