Legislative Action

Abortion Counseling

S 323, HR 392
The Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee last week approved a bill that would require government-funded family-planning clinics to inform their clients about all their reproductive options, including abortion.

Civil Rights

HR 1
The House last week passed the proposed “civil rights act of 1991" by a vote of 273 to 158, 17 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to override a threatened veto by President Bush.

Dropout Prevention

HR 2312
The House last week approved legislation to extend the dropout-prevention demonstration program through 1993.

Education Budget, FY 1992

The House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee last week marked up its fiscal 1992 budget bill, which will not be made public until it is considered by the full committee.

National Testing

HR 2435
The House Education and Labor Committee last week approved legislation to create a council charged with studying the “desirability and feasibility” of a national testing system.

Student Aid

Reauthorization Hearings
The House Postsecondary Education Subcommittee last week held several hearings on the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
