Joan Raymond, the former superintendent of the Houston public schools who resigned under pressure earlier this year, has accepted a one-year position with a suburban Chicago district.0

Ms. Raymond, a native of Chicago, has agreed to become interim superintendent of the 1,000-student River Forest, Ill., school district. She succeeds Wayne Buchholz, who resigned last month after being indicted
on charges of theft and official misconduct.

The former Houston school chief had been an unsuccessful finalist in the competition for the superintendent's job in Boston.

Kieran Egan, a professor of education at Simon Fraser University in Canada, has won a $150,000 Grawemeyer Award in Education for his book Primary Understand)& ing: Education in Early Childhood. In his book, Mr. Egan encourages teach) ers to use storytelling to spark children's creativity

The annual awards are sponsored by the University of Louisville.

Officials at Owatonna (Minn.) High School were pleasantly shocked to discover the legacy of Gisle and Eva Johnson--a $1-million college scholarship fund for graduates of the school.)

Mr. Johnson, a native of the town in the southeastern part of the state, was the owner of several luxury-car dealerships in the state.

The Johnsons died a few months apart in 1989. The Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of )!% America will administer the education fund, which will provide grants of $1,000 to $3,000 a year for undergraduate study.
