U.S. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander has named 222 public and private secondary schools as 1990-91 Blue Ribbon Schools. Nominated schools were evaluated on factors such as: demonstrating a high quality of leadership; providing an environment that promotes teacher growth and recognition; using up-to-date and rigorous core curriculum and instruction; maintaining a safe, orderly, and drug-free climate; encouraging strong parent and community support; and documenting evidence of success.

Each blue-ribbon school will receive a specially designed flag to be flown over the school and a plaque commemorating the achievement.
