Three Roman Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York have announced that they will close at the end of this school year.
However, archdiocesan officials say that probably no more than five schools will be forced to close this year.
Some observers of the Catholic school system in New York feared massive school closings would result from a decision by the archdiocese to reduce next school year the subsidies it currently provides to about two-thirds of the 243 elementary schools in the archdiocese.
