Copyright Protection

The House Judiciary Committee last week unanimously approved a bill that would make schools and colleges vulnerable to copyright-infringement lawsuits, a measure education groups have opposed. The Senate Judiciary Committee could mark up a similar measure this week.
Drug-Abuse Prevention
The Senate last week approved a drug bill that would weaken the measure it passed last month to deny federal aid to schools that do not have strict anti-drug policies. (See story, page 25.)

The House has approved the conference report on a $10.2-billion Interior Department appropriations bill that would allocate $361 million in fiscal 1990 for Indian-education programs of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Education Department. (See story, page 23.)

Teacher Recruitment
Senators Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island Sept. 26 introduced two measures to provide financial incentives designed to encourage young people to become teachers.
