Utah’s teachers set out to demonstrate their impact on the state’s economy recently and succeeded--but not quite in the way they planned.
To illustrate the impact of teacher spending in the state, the Utah Education Association distributed to its 15,000 members stickers printed with an apple and the words “Teacher Dollars.’' The union urged all teachers to attach the postage-stamp-size stickers to their checks. The plan went awry, however, when many of the checks could not be processed by bank computers because the stickers covered the teachers’ account numbers.
