Former State Superintendent of Education Leslie Fisher of Oklahoma died last week of heart failure at the age of 65.
Mr. Fisher served as state superintendent from 1971 to 1984. He was re-elected three times after building a strong political base among rural school districts, but resigned in 1984 to seek the Democratic nomination for governor. Under Mr. Fisher’s leadership, the state education department’s budget increased from $1.4 million to $17.3 million.
