N.E.A. Not Ready To Back Candidate
Officials of the National Education Association said last week that the union is not yet ready to endorse a Presidential candidate.
The nea-pac council unanimously approved the recommendation by Mary Hatwood Futrell, president of the union, Dec. 3.
Ms. Futrell predicted at a Washington press conference that no endorsement would be made until the spring.
The union president said she based her decision on several factors, including reports submitted by state nea affiliates, based on a total of 1,751 open hearings with their members. The majority of people at those hearings had yet to decide which Presidential candidate they wanted nea to support. Most state affiliates also agreed that Dec. 3 was too early for an endorsement.--lo
