The Education Department last week awarded a five-year, $6-million contract for a new Reading Research and Education Center, to be located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Efforts to solve practical problems in literacy instruction, especially for disadvantaged children, will be the major focus of the center’s research. According to the department, the center will look at ways to upgrade children’s reading skills, improve teaching strategies, and measure reading abilities more accurately.
