According to recent surveys, more than 40 percent of principals are considering leaving their jobs. With the pandemic, running a school building has become even more complicated, and principals’ workloads continue to grow. If we don’t do something soon, we may lose our best and brightest.

Ray McNulty
President National Dropout Prevention Center
McNulty is the president of the National Dropout Prevention Center (NDPC) and the Successful Practices Network (SPN). Previously, he was the dean for the School of Education at Southern New Hampshire University. An educator since 1973, McNulty has been a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. From 2001-2003, he was Vermont’s education commissioner.
Kristina MacBury
Principal Sarah Pyle Academy (Wilmington, Del.)
MacBury has been working in education for almost 25 years, in the classroom as a principal, consultant, author, and speaker with a focus on education reform and mental health advocacy. In 2018, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) recognized MacBury as one of its Digital Principals of the Year; in 2017, she was named a Top 30 Technologist, Transformer, and Trailblazer by the Center for Digital Education. Her school has also been recognized on several occasions, including as a Trauma Informed Champion by the state of Delaware.
David E. DeMatthews, Ph.D.,
Associate Professor University of Texas at Austin
David DeMatthews is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he was an assistant professor at the University of Texas at El Paso. DeMatthews began his career as a teacher, campus leader, and district administrator in Baltimore City’s and then Washington’s public school systems. DeMatthews’ research focuses on equitable and inclusive school improvement with an emphasis on leadership and policy. He looks at how districts and schools create equitable and inclusive schools at the intersections of race, social class, language, and other markers of identity. He has also cultivated a stream of research focused on principal career pathways, job-related stress and burnout, and turnover.
Peter DeWitt is a former K-5 public school principal turned author, presenter, and leadership coach.
