The start of May means summer and summer brain drain, or the learning loss that occurs over the summer when students aren’t in school, will be upon us quickly.

Today also marks the first day in a free, three-part webinar series hosted by the Department of Education School Turnaround Learning Community and the National Summer Learning Association to combat the learning loss, which research has shown to more significantly affect underprivileged students who lack exposure to academically enriching experiences when they aren’t in school.

Guest speakers for today’s 1 p.m. (EST) webinar on “Summer learning loss and the achievement gap” include:

Linda Eberhart, executive director of the office of teaching and learning for Baltimore school district, who I spoke with in my story last summer on districts’ innovative summer learning programs.

Tiffany Cooper Gueye, CEO of BELL, who you may remember from a Q&A on Beyond School

Jennifer McCombs, senior policy researcher at RAND, who was the lead researcher on last year’s big report on summer learning loss.

Upcoming webinar topics will be on new visions for summer school and resources for high-quality summer programs. You can register here. (These webinars will also be archived.)
