The Journal of the American Medical Association provides information about obtaining a copy of “Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in the United States, 1999-2004.”

Increasing numbers of children in the United States are overweight, suggesting that efforts to combat childhood obesity have not been working, concludes a study published in the April 5 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

About 4,000 children and youths ages 2 to 19 were included in the study, which examined their weight, height, and body-mass index between 1999 and 2004. The incidence of overweight males in the study group increased from 14 percent to 18.2 percent, and the percentage of females who were overweight also went up, from 13.8 percent to 16 percent.
