Raj Manhas, the superintendent of the Seattle public schools, announced last week that he will step down from the job at the end of the school year. Mr. Manhas, who joined the 46,000-student district in 2001 as its chief operating officer, became the interim superintendent in June 2003; later that year, he was named the permanent superintendent. He is credited with restoring fiscal stability to the district, which now has a $20 million reserve, about 5 percent of its general operating fund.
