The recently published Black Authors: A Selected Annotated Bibliography offers a first-of-a-kind compilation of information on 3,000 books written, coauthored, or edited by black Americans.

Featuring works spanning nearly 200 years, Black Authors offers annotated descriptions of books by subject area, such as autobiography, education, philosophy, and technology. Author and title indexes are also included.

For more information on the bibliography, contact Garland Publishing, 136 Madison Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10016; (212) 686-7492.

Another useful reference work focusing on minorities is the Directory of Special Programs for Minority Group Members, a comprehensive resource for high-school students looking toward college and beyond.

The directory lists over 4,000 programs, including opportunities for financial aid for secondary and postsecondary study, women’s programs, and publications focusing on minority interests. Other listings highlight job-placement organizations, employment-training programs, internships, and summer employment.

The 340-page directory is available for $30 from Garrett Park Press, P.O. Box 190, Garrett Park, Md. 20896.

English-as-a-Second-Language students and those learning Spanish will be able to take advantage of a unique line of Spanish-language children’s books to be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Mirasol: Libros Juveniles, a continuing line of hardcover children’s books, will debut in the fall; four or five books for various age groups will be marketed each spring and fall.

Three of the imprint’s first five releases, slated for the fall, are Caldecott- and Newbery-award-winning works: El gato con botas (Puss in Boots), Irene, la valiente (Brave Irene) and Tontimundo y el barco volador (The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship). All of the books have previously been published in English by Farrar.

The Mirasol books will be available at bookstores nationwide.

Photos of Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, and the rock band rem grace this year’s additions to the American Library Association’s “Read’’ poster series.

The popular series includes other prose-promoting celebrities such as Bill Cosby, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Oprah Winfrey, and Sting.

The three new posters can be ordered for $5 each or $12 for the set. For a free catalogue, write to ala Graphics, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, Ill. 60611.--skg
