The White House announced last Friday the nomination of Ted Sanders, state school superintendent of Illinois, to be undersecretary of education.
Mr. Sanders, who has been a highly visible state chief, serving as president of the Council of Chief State School Officers and chairman of its committee on teacher education, has held the Illinois post since 1985. Before that, he was superintendent of public instruction in Nevada for six years.
A member of the board of directors of the Educational Testing Service, Mr. Sanders also serves on the Mathematical Sciences Education Board and the executive committee of the National Council for Accrediting Teacher Education.
Nancy Kennedy, a member of the White House office of legislation during the Reagan Administration, was nominated as the department’s assistant secretary for legislation.
