Barbara Gardner will join the Massachusetts Department of Education as the associate commissioner for school readiness.
Ms. Gardner, 58, is the majority whip of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where she served as the vice chairwoman of the joint committee on education, arts, and the humanities.

The National Association of Elementary School Principals has named Gail C. Gross and Deborah B. Reeve as deputy executive directors of the 28,000-member group.

Ms. Gross previously served as the organization’s associate executive director for marketing and strategic alliances, while Ms. Reeve was the associate executive director for development and special projects.
The Charter Schools Development Corp. has selected Wayne R. Walker to serve as its executive director. The nonprofit organization plans to provide support for the development of charter schools, first in its pilot site in Washington, where the group is based, and then nationally.
Mr. Walker, 41, formerly served as the chairman of the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity International and as the senior counsel for the Delaware-based E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.
James E. Davis has been appointed the executive director of the Social Science Education Consortium, based in Boulder, Colo. Mr. Davis, 59, currently serves as the director of the Center for Economics Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
