Christopher T. Cross, the president and chief executive officer of the Council of Basic Education, plans to leave the Washington-based organization at the end of this year and return to his home state of California to work as an educational consultant.

Mr. Cross, 61, has been the CBE’s top executive for seven years. He has also served as the president of the Maryland state board of education and as the U.S. Department of Education’s assistant secretary for educational research and improvement during the previous Bush administration. The council’s board of directors is expected to announce a successor for Mr. Cross in late October.
Founded in 1956, the CBE offers programs and publications aimed at strengthening the teaching and learning of liberal arts in public schools.

After a 35-year career in educational technology, David G. Moursund, 65, announced this month that he has retired as the editor in chief of Learning & Leading with Technology, a publication he created for the International Society for Technology in Education, or ISTE, a nonprofit professional organization based in Eugene, Ore., for educators interested in educational technology.
Diane L. Smallwood was chosen this month by members of the National Association of School Psychologists to be the group’s new president-elect. During her one-year term, Ms. Smallwood, 51, will continue to serve as a school psychologist for the 7,000-student South Brunswick schools in New Jersey. However, she will take a leave of absence from her current job for a year when she assumes her role as NASP president in July of 2002.
