To give local curriculum specialists an idea of the skills and topics to be included in the 1990 National Assessment of Educational Progress’s tests of reading, mathematics, and science, the Educational Testing Service has issued documents outlining the tests’ objectives.
The materials reflect the views of a range of teachers, curriculum specialists, subject-area experts, and policymakers on what students should know and be able to do in those subjects.
In addition to the national assessment, naep in 1990 also will conduct a trial state-level assessment of 8th-grade mathematics that would permit state-by-state comparisons of student-achievement data. The mathematics objectives will be used forboth the national and state-level assessments.
The ets currently operates naep under a contract with the U.S. Education Department. In the future, the objectives will be produced by naep’s policymaking body, the National Assessment Governing Board.
