Kate L. Turabian, author of a stylebook used by generations of high-school, undergraduate, and graduate students, died Oct. 25 in Oakland, Calif. She was 94 years old.

Ms. Turabian wrote A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, the best-selling work ever published by the University of Chicago Press, while she was serving as dissertations secretary at the university. She did not hold a college degree.

Still popular in schools and universities, the manual has sold more than 5 million copies. The issuing of the fifth edition last May marked the 50th anniversary of the book’s initial publication.

Ms. Turabian was also the author of Student’s Guide for Writing College Papers.

The National School Boards Association’s executive director emeritus, Harold V. Webb, died of cancer Oct. 19 in Evanston, Ill., at the age of 68.

A former Kansas teacher and school superintendent, Mr. Webb joined the nsba staff in 1958, after serving as executive director of the Wyoming School Boards Association.

His tenure as executive director of the national association--from 1961 to 1977--was a period of expanding growth and influence for the nsba, during which its national offices were moved to Washington. He was given the title of emeritus director on his retirement by vote of the group’s board of directors.

In recent years, Mr. Webb had worked as a school-management consultant in Wilmette, Ill.
