The following summarizes final action on the state education budget and related matters. Budget totals for K-12 education include money for state education administration, but do not include federal dollars that flow through state government.

MICHIGAN

Governor: John Engler (R)

FY 1998 state budget:
$30.6 billion

FY 1998 K-12 budget:
$9.4 billion

FY 1997 K-12 budget:
$8.6 billion

Percent change K-12 budget:
+9.3 percent

Estimated enrollment:
1.7 million

Highlights:

  • Two-year budget package includes $800 million over 10 years to repay school districts for previously underfunded, state-mandated special education programs. Legislators also passed $9.7 billion K-12 school budget for fiscal 1999.

  • Approved $100,000 in fiscal 1998 for planning grants to reduce class sizes. Will increase to $20 million in fiscal 1999.

  • Spending on programs for at-risk students will increase from $230 million last year to $250 million in fiscal 1998 and $260 million in 1999.
