In Case You Missed It

Sen. John McCain of Arizona wrote an editorial on education, published in the New York Daily News on Sunday. There isn’t much in there that’s new - in fact, a lot of the text is excerpted from his speech in which he endorsed the statement. Unsurprisingly, he reiterated his challenge to his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, to sign-on to the Education Equality Project’s statement. The editorial itself isn’t as interesting as the fact that the McCain campaign is willing to give that much ink to education - an issue McCain hasn’t seemed particularly passionate about.

Also on Sunday, the New York Times ran a story about Obama and affirmative action that’s generated quite a bit of discussion on education blogs. You can read some reaction on Quick and the Ed, Flypaper, and Alexander Russo’s “This Week in Education.”

And, if you’re interested in the veep search, check out this column, by the oft-quoted Stuart Rothenberg, editor of The Rothenberg Political Report. He sketches out how various potential veeps would help or hinder McCain and Obama’s chances of winning the White House and seems to think the Democratic field of contenders has the edge.
