College Access

The Indianapolis-based Lumina Foundation for Education awarded more than $2.9 million in grants in the second quarter of 2007. The grants went to 26 organizations that work to increase college access for all students. The recipients are listed below: California: Taproot Foundation, San Francisco.

Colorado: National Center for Higher Education Management Systems, Boulder; State Higher Education Executive Officers, Boulder.

District of Columbia: Aspen Institute; Education Writers Association; Excelencia in Education, Inc.; Grantmakers for Effective Organizations; Institute for Higher Education Policy.

Florida: Hillsborough Community College Foundation, Tampa.

Illinois: Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, Chicago.

Indiana: DePauw University, Greencastle; Encouragement Services, Inc., Bloomington; Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Indianapolis.

Louisiana: Louisiana Student Financial Assistance Commission, Baton Rouge.

Michigan: Scholarship America, Edina.

New York: Learning Matters, Inc., New York City; Social Science Research Council, New York City.

North Dakota: University of Mary, Bismarck.

Pennsylvania: OMG Center for Collaborative Learning, Philadelphia.

Rhode Island: Rhode Island Student Loan Authority, Warwick.

Texas: Community College Survey of Student Engagement, Austin.

Virginia: Educational Policy Institute, Inc., Virginia Beach; Guidestar, Williamsburg; Virginia Tech Foundation, Blacksburg.

Civic Engagement

The Pew Charitable Trusts, a Philadelphia-based national public policy philanthropy, recently awarded $225,000 to the Washington-based Generations United to facilitate the expansion of their Seniors4Kids civic engagement initiative to Kentucky and New York. Seniors4Kids works to encourage voters over the age of 50 to promote policies to develop and implement high-quality pre-K programs.

Tutoring Program

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation to help fund a Web-based survey for the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation’s Partners in Education tutoring program. The tutoring program currently has 1,200 tutors in 50 schools in the Oklahoma City school district.

Counseling Program

The St. Paul, Minn.-based Bush Foundation awarded a $1.2 million grant to the 41,500-student Independent School District 625 – St. Paul. The grant will continue funding for the Connected Counseling program, which works to provide frequent group counseling sessions for students rather than sporadic one-on-one meetings between students and their counselors. The program began in 2002.
