The Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences has awarded a $6 million grant to researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo to scale up their efforts to test a new mathematics curriculum for preschoolers.

Researchers will use the grant, which is spread out over five years, to conduct a large-scale, randomized study of a program known as TRIAD, which has yielded promising results so far in smaller studies. According to a news release from the university, the new project will involve thousands of children, most of them considered to be at risk of low achievement, in 120 preschool classrooms in two states. Researchers will track the participants through 1stgrade.

Douglas H. Clements, one of the lead investigators in the study, said in the press release that the findings will help determine whether the program can have a national impact on students’ academic achievement.
