LOS ANGELES (AP) — A wealthy couple donated $50 million Wednesday to help fund Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s effort to reform two low-performing high schools along with the elementary and middle schools that feed them.
The gift from Richard and Melanie Lundquist will be spread out over the next 10 years to the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, a nonprofit organization set up to fund the mayor’s program.
“This donation is directly connected to the education reform effort Mayor Villaraigosa has been leading for the last two years,” Melanie Lundquist said. She said she will work with the nonprofit’s staff on its fundraising efforts, and Richard Lundquist will serve as a senior adviser.
The couple own Continental Development Corp., a real estate development firm with properties in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
