Jacob W. Getzels, a leading scholar in the fields of creativity research and educational administration, died April 7 at age 89.
Mr. Getzels, a professor of education and psychology at the University of Chicago, is considered one of the fathers of research into creativity. His 1962 book, Creativity and Intelligence, written with his University of Chicago colleague Philip Jackson, is a classic in the field.
In its recognition of the role of creativity and personal values in the development of intelligence, the book challenged accepted theories and helped broaden methods of testing intelligence in schools.
Mr. Getzels, who was born in Poland, also is credited with helping to establish the study of educational administration as an area worthy of scholarly inquiry.
