Educators and School Awards, Contests, Fellowships, and Other Deadlines

June 30—Early-childhood education: Applications are due for the Preschool Teacher of the Year Award, sponsored by Story Reader, a product of the children’s electronic-book publisher Publications International, Ltd. Teachers who work with children ages 3-6 in pre-kindergarten settings may be nominated for 50 state awards and four national awards. Each state winner will receive Publications International products valued at $625, and each national winner will receive a cash prize of $1,500 and a $1,500 donation to his or her respective schools. June 30—English: Applications are due for the Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines, sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English. Middle school and high school student-literary magazines will be ranked on the quality of their literary content and their design and graphics. Only one entry may be submitted per school. June 30—Technology: Applications are due for an essay contest, sponsored by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and the Microsoft Corporation. Adults, including educators and community members, and students are asked to write 100-word essays about K-12 schools or classes that miss out on learning opportunities because they lack access to technology.The school nominated by the writer of the winning essay will receive $200,000 in Samsung and Microsoft products. Schools nominated by the writers of 20 runner-up essays will each receive $60,000 in products. Every winning essay writer will receive an MP3 player. Student Awards, Contests, and Other Scholarships

June 21—Community service: Applications are due for Disney Minnie grants, sponsored by Disney and Youth Service America. Grants of up to $500 are available to fund community-service projects led by or serving youths ages 5-25 taking place Sept. 1-30. June 30—Essay contest: Applications are due for an international essay contest, sponsored by The Goi Peace Foundation. Students are asked to write essays about promoting tolerance and peace in globalized societies. Essays in English, French, Spanish, or German will be judged in two categories: children up to age 14, and youths ages 15-25. Prizes range from $900 and an all-expenses paid trip to the International Youth Forum in Tokyo in November to honorable-mention certificates. June 30—Internships: Applications are due for the Student Leaders program, sponsored by Bank of America. Students who will be in grades 11-12 in the fall of 2006 can apply for 8-week paid summer internships at nonprofit organizations selected by Bank of America.
