More news on the expansion of Education Week‘s video team! Kavitha Cardoza, an award-winning special correspondent for education, poverty, and children for the Washington, D.C.-based NPR member station WAMU, will join EdWeek‘s editorial team August 1.
It’s part of EdWeek’s expansion as a multiplatform news organization—EdWeek moved aggressively into video and TV last summer with the acquisition of Learning Matters TV.
Education Week has produced about a dozen feature segments for the PBS NewsHour’s weekly education segment Making the Grade over the past 10 months. Education Week‘s reporters, editors, and producers have collaborated on such stories as the resolution of special education lawsuits in Los Angeles, efforts by public schools to ensure a safe environment for Muslim students in St. Cloud, Minn., and the push for high-speed broadband to support student learning in rural Calhoun County, Miss.
The hiring of Kavitha will further Education Week’s work providing news and analysis of pre-K through higher education for an array of education and general audiences.
Kavitha has been a reporter and correspondent for WAMU since 2008, with her coverage often airing nationally on NPR. She has received a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Hard News and a National Award for Education Reporting, as well as recognition from local broadcast organizations.
Cardoza’s recent coverage has included a reporting series on the development of mental-health issues in early childhood and stories on school testing, military children, teacher evaluation, and college admissions, as well as regular beat coverage of the District of Columbia school system.
