The eventual Democratic presidential nominee should commit to selecting a woman as his running mate, says a letter signed by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and other prominent women this week.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the leading candidates, have both said they are considering women for the position. Hawaiian Rep. Tulsi Gabbard remains in the race but, with two delegates, she is effectively out of contention.

The letter to the Democratic National Committee also calls on the eventual nominee to “appoint a governing majority of women in the presidential cabinet,” to meet with women of all races and backgrounds, and to make women’s economic issues a priority of the first 100 days of any new Democratic administration.

“To win the support of women from all of our diverse communities, candidates must reflect both our shared issues and the specific needs of each of our communities in their platforms and commit to including our voices in representative strength in government,” says the letter, which was also signed by leaders from groups like Emily’s List, Planned Parenthood, and the Association of Flight Attendants.

The letter, first reported by Politico, comes a week after Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, once considered a front-runner, ended her 2020 campaign. Weingarten endorsed Warren in her individual capacity. In 2016, she endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The AFT and the National Education Association have yet to make an endorsement in the primary.
