The Internal Revenue Service has created an online educational feature designed to help high school kids and others uncover the “mysteries of taxes.”
Divided into sections on the “how’s” and “why’s” of taxes, the agency’s “Understanding Taxes” program seeks to teach students about the “the history, theory, and application of taxes in the United States.”
Browse the student and teacher sites for “Understanding Taxes,” from the IRS.
The program is oriented around 36 lessons, ranging from “Payroll Taxes and Federal Income Tax Withholding” to the “Evolution of Taxation in the Constitution.” It includes interactive activities and self-graded assessments tied to the lesson themes, as well as tax tutorials and tax-filing simulations.
Subject areas covered, according to the IRS, include government, mathematics, life skills, technology, and U.S. history. The program includes an interactive database of relevant state and national standards.
