If teachers aren’t given the chance, the status quo will remain. A good teacher would like nothing better than to help a mediocre teacher. And a committed teacher would like to shoot those teachers who leave the building right after school’s out and are never seen again until the next morning. When we all agree that teaching is not a 9-to-5 job, then we’ll understand professionalism. More and more teachers want to be able to say, “OK, you have got to straighten up or get out of teaching.” We should be allowed to govern our own. To decide who should and who should not be in the profession. And help those who are in the wrong profession to find a way either to become suitable for the profession or [to find] another.
