exit exam

A high-stakes test that students are required to pass in order to earn their diploma. As of May 2004, 24 states have adopted exit exams in order to ensure that all high school graduates have achieved basic levels of academic proficiency and are ready for college or the workforce. Opponents of the exams worry that they will encourage struggling students to drop out of school, while others dispute any evidence that exit exams have had a negative impact on graduation rates.
