drug-free school zones

In response to public concern over an increase in illegal drug use during the 1980s, the U.S. Congress and many state legislatures have passed laws designating areas around schools as drug-free zones. Persons caught or convicted of possession or use of illegal drugs in these areas are subject to increased penalties under the law. The actual area of the zone and the penalties vary from state to state.
