attention-deficit disorder (ADD)

A disorder characterized by the inability to concentrate and, in some cases, impulsiveness and hyperactivity. Between 3 and 10 percent of the nation's school-age children are thought to have the disorder. Some children qualify for special-education services on the basis of having this disorder. The children who are hyperactive are often labeled ADHD, for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
