A recent Gallup poll found that only 35.1 percent of new teachers are "engaged," defined as "deeply involved in and enthusiastic about their work and actively contributing to their organization." New teachers are more engaged than other new professionals, but their engagement also drops more quickly than non-teachers'. Just 30.9 percent of teachers who have taught for one to three years are engaged.
Do these numbers sound right to you? Why do you think new teachers might start off more engaged than other professionals? Why might their enthusiasm wane more quickly? Share your thoughts. |
