The Maryland State Department of Education has been awarded the 2007 Partnership State Award from the National Network of Partnership Schools at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., for helping districts and schools develop programs that encourage strong partnerships between schools, families, and communities.
Metlife Foundation, the charitable branch of New York City-based MetLife, Inc., a company providing financial services, and the Reston, Va.-based National Association of Secondary School Principals, named Molly Howard, the principal of Jefferson County High School in Louisville, Ga., the 2008 National High School Principal of the Year.
The NASSP also gives an award to a national middle level principal of the year, which will be announced at a later date. The middle level finalists are Meredith Caswell of Samuel Slater Junior High School in Pawtucket R.I.; Patsy Dean of Upson-Lee Middle School in Thomaston, Ga.; and James Dierke of Visitacion Valley Middle School in San Francisco. The other high school finalists are Bruce Curry of Polytech High School in Woodside, Del., and Cheryl Guyett of A.J. Dimond High School in Anchorage, Alaska.
