The U.S. Senate education committee will have three new members during the 115th session of Congress, including the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2016 and two freshmen senators.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Hillary Clinton’s running mate last year, has been an advocate for career and technical education during his time in the Senate. He’s also supported educational programs in schools aimed at preventing sexual assault.
Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., was her state’s governor before being elected to the Senate last year. While serving in that office, she vetoed a bill that would have repealed the Common Core State Standards.
Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., previously served in the House of Representatives. He is against what he considers federal intrusion into decisions about education, and has also sought to change the student-loan system.
The committee roster includes 12 Republicans and 11 Democrats.
