Teacher asks student whether she is an illegal immigrant
CLIFTON, Va. (AP) — A mother is calling for her daughter's Fairfax County high school English teacher to be suspended after the educator asked the girl whether she is an illegal immigrant.
Kelly Valero tells WUSA-TV (http://on.wusa9.com/2gsRQOc) that her daughter, who is Hispanic, wrote an essay in her Centreville High School class responding to President-elect Donald Trump's victory. The girl wrote she is upset because she thinks Trump will try to deport her family.
Valero says the unidentified teacher wrote on the essay "If I may ask, Are you legal or illegal? ... I hope you get to stay!" Valero called the comment hurtful.
Fairfax County Public Schools said in a statement that the teacher's comment was "inappropriate" and school administrators have addressed the matter.
Officials declined to discuss any possible disciplinary action.
