Suburban N.Y. Schools Agree to Improve Access for ELLs
Seven suburban districts in New York state have reached an agreement with the state attorney general to expand educational access for students with limited English skills.
The districts on Long Island are Riverhead, Patchogue-Medford, Amityville, Greenport, East Hampton, and Hampton Bays. The Mount Vernon city district in Westchester County has agreed to similar steps for students classified as English-language learners.
The districts will seek to ensure students are properly screened for language ability. Parental notifictions will be made in families' native languages, and interpreters will be available to parents at various school functions. The agreement also calls for improved training for district personnel.
