Election race for SC education chief underway
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Now that the field of candidates is whittled down, the race for South Carolina superintendent turns to a discussion of the issues.
The three candidates seeking the post participate on Sunday in a forum in Myrtle Beach before members of the South Carolina School Boards Association.
The Republican candidate is Molly Spearman, the former director of the state Association of School Administrators who emerged from an eight-way GOP primary and a runoff in June to win the party nomination.
Democrat Tom Thompson, the former dean of graduate studies at the University of South Carolina, also won after a runoff in the party's four-way June primary.
American Party candidate Ed Murray is also running. Incumbent Mick Zais did not seek re-election.
