Madeleine Fuchs Holzer has become the first educator-in-residence for the Academy of American Poets, which supports K-12 teachers and encourages young people to engage with poetry. She is a former director of arts in education at the New York State Council on the Arts and the executive director of EmaginationEd, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and fostering perception, imagination, and creative action across academic disciplines.

Richard Holly has been named the deputy executive director of finance and operations for the National Association for the Education of Young Children. He has 22 years of experience in the finance sector, including the past three as the NAECY's chief accounting officer.

President Barack Obama has announced a slate of appointees to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African-Americans:

Peggy L. Brookins is the co-founder, director, and mathematics instructor for the Engineering and Manufacturing Institute of Technology at Forest High School in Ocala, Fla.

Kent McGuire is the president of the Southern Education Foundation and also served as an assistant secretary for educational research and improvement at the U.S. Department of Education.

Evelynn M. Hammonds is the Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz professor of the history of science and a professor of African and African-American studies at Harvard University.

Michael T. Nettles is a senior vice president and holds the Edmund W. Gordon chair of the Policy Evaluation and Research Center at the Educational Testing Service.

Spencer Overton is a law professor at George Washington University.



Becky Pringle is the secretary-treasurer of the National Education Association and a 31-year veteran middle school science teacher in the Susquehanna district in Harrisburg, Pa.

John Rice is the founder and CEO of Management Leadership for Tomorrow, a career-development institution for racial and ethnic minorities.
