Maine Gov. strikes back in charter school debate
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is criticizing the state Senate's top Democrat for comments about a new Portland charter school, fueling a larger debate about school choice in Maine.
In a letter to Senate President Justin Alfond, LePage said Wednesday that Alfond and teachers' unions are "fighting tirelessly to deny Maine students the choice of where they can get the best education." LePage says all students should have an education tailored to fit their individual needs.
The Republican governor's letter is in response to Alfond's criticism of Baxter Academy for hosting an event Wednesday for the Maine Heritage Policy Center, a conservative group.
Alfond told the Portland Press Herald in a statement Monday that school was aligning itself with "one of the most political fringe groups in the state."
