2 Calif. districts get Gates Foundation grants
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Two California school districts are among just three nationwide to win $5 million grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1c5CU14 ) Fresno Unified and Long Beach Unified will each receive the Innovative Professional Development grant, to help implement the new Common Core standards and pay for teachers' professional development training.
The third award went to the Jefferson County School District in Golden, Colo.
The money will be used to teach educators new skills and improve the way they deliver lesson plans.
Fresno Unified Superintendent Michael Hanson said Wednesday the funds will help personalize training for teachers in grades seven through 12.
It's the second time this year that the Gates Foundation has given money to Fresno Unified. In January, the district got more than $285,000 for other teacher training programs.
